Blind testing a 30 dB Dynamic Range

Purpose

This test will help you evaluate the masking effect of the ambient noise present in your listening room.

Files being tested

30 dB Mute

The first file tests the target (30 dB here) by alternating noise at a full scale level and the same noise 30 decibels below the full scale: 1 second at full scale, 1 second at -30 dB, then 1 second again at full scale, and 1 second at -30 dB. The second file alternates full sale level noise and pure digital silence.

To pass a blind test, you will need to perform 10 trials at least, obtain a high score and reach a high confidence level: 95% is standard to rate statistical significance. It means that your score outperforms random guesses by 95%. There is still a probability that you just got lucky though, 5%. To reduce such probability to 1%, keep testing until you reached a confidence level of 99%.

If you didn't pass this test, try with a lower dynamic range difference. Change the target on the top of this column.
